The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is an intergovernmental body whose focus is the promotion of gender equality. Created in 1946 by the Economic and Social Council, this global entity encourages the empowerment of women and women’s rights, and shares numerous representatives with the ambassadors of the United Nations, and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The joint efforts between these NGOs, the UN, and the CSW have led to a variety of actions, as spelled out by its current framework, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This framework addresses issues, defines goals and actions for the CSW and its supporters, and issues checkpoints to ensure progress.
Issues outlined by the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action:
- Women and poverty
- Education and training of women
- Women and the media
- Women and armed conflict
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action creates plans to combat these issues. One goal and outcome is an increase in gender-facing events hosted by the UN.
The focus of the 62nd session of the CSW is to address the current challenges facing gender equality of rural women and girls, and opportunities the CSW can use to encourage the empowerment of these females. The 62nd session will also review the previous theme of women’s opportunity in the media, and analyze the conclusion of this theme from the 47th session.
